Exotic Birds

Parrots need Regular Access to Robust Bird Stands
Bird stands for smaller birds such as finches kept in captivity need not be as robust or sturdy as bird stands made for exotic birds such as macaws, cockatiels and parrots.
Likewise because parrots and exotic birds need a more specialized diet than other smaller species of birds and generally need to be need lavished extra care it is essential to have a reliable and regular supplier to ensure continuity of supply; however equally as important to a regular supplier and supply is good quality and consistent quality.
Sadly many exotic bird owners have some difficulty in finding a regular and consistent quality supply of bird food and indeed a supplier of a range of varying size, robust bird stands.
Like bird toys and puzzles that exotic birds should have available to stimulate their intelligence (they are VERY intelligent birds) it is wise to have several bird stands around the house if the bird has free range and access all around your home.
Parrots are territorial, and while they have no issues with humans if there is more than one exotic bird in the family it is sometimes better to have two or more bird stands so they can stake a claim and also do not have to be in close proximity to each other when the mood takes them
Parrots and other Exotic Species are reasonably sociable toward each other but they do need personal space from time to time and the last thing any exotic bird owner needs is two birds squawking and shouting at each other – or worse because they both get in a bad mood and want the same bird stand.
However, don’t just stop at one bird stand; give your bird(s) a large selection to play on. Indeed, with a large selection of bird toys and accessories to keep them stimulated, it is difficult to see how any exotic bird could become bored.
Varying sized bird stands placed in and around the house or home will give your bird a variety of places it can call its own; imagine, put yourself in their place and have to stare out of the same window which faced on to a brick wall. Exactly!
There is a reliable and regular supplier of bird food and other bird supplies that delivers anywhere in the US, and who are actually owners of a large flock of their own exotic birds, and they do actually know what they are talking about.

Exotic Birds and Fruit $34.39 In the old days of LPs, it used to be easy to set an automatic record player such that, when the needle came to the end of one side of a record, the tone arm would pick up, glide back to the outer rim of the disc, drop down, and start all over again. Thus, one could listen to the same 20 minutes of music repeatedly, and some people never bothered to turn the records over and listen to the other sides. If any LP might have been designed for this procedure, it was Procol Harum’s seventh studio album, Exotic Birds and Fruit, initially released in April 1974. The four songs making up side one — “Nothing But the Truth,” “Beyond the Pale,” “As Strong as Samson,” and “The Idol” — featured some of the band’s best later work. They had retreated somewhat from the orchestral hybrid of their previous album, Grand Hotel, although “Nothing But the Truth” still boasted a string arrangement. They replaced the sweetening with extra muscle in the remaining instruments, making this one of the group’s harder rocking sets. And lyricist Keith Reid, having explored elegant decay in Grand Hotel, was unusually straightforward in his social prescriptions here. True, the words still dripped with literary references to everything from Shakespeare to ancient mythology, but, as Reid declared up front, this time he was interested in “Nothing But the Truth.” He expressed that truth most eloquently in “As Strong as Samson,” an outright political statement, if one spoken in general terms. The song was also downcast, and composer/singer/pianist Gary Brooker gave it a lovely, wistful melody. The disillusionment was completed with the final song on the first side and its tagline, “Just another idol turned to clay.” In contrast to the masterpiece that was side one, side two of the LP was uneven, containing second-echelon songs, the best of them perhaps being the most lighthearted, “Fresh Fruit,” a tune that gave Brooker a chance to exercise his barrelhouse piano talents. In this CD reissue, annotator Patrick Humphries suggests that the rocker “Butterfly Boys” might have been directed at the executives at the band’s label, Chrysalis Records. If so, they must have been unhappy, as Brooker cried, “Give us a break! We got the crumbs…you got the cake.” The reissue adds two bonus tracks, the first being the non-LP B-side “Drunk Again” (Reid writes so much about drinking, it makes you worry about his liver), a rocker that allows Brooker to bring out his inner Jerry Lee Lewis. The second is an alternate mix of “As Strong as Samson” that is in a lower key than the master take. Since it seems to be the same take, just a bit slower (and 17 seconds longer), that may account for its being in D flat. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Gary Brooker – Harmonica, Vocals, Keyboards, Piano; Alan Cartwright – Bass; |

Exotic Birds and Fruit [Bonus Tracks] $11.18 After two albums that combined progressive rock with orchestral grandeur, Procol Harum returned to the basics on this 1974 outing. This time, the accent was returned to the thick electric guitar and swirling guitar on a batch of lushly textured but driving songs that covered everything from hard rock to moody prog and even a bit of music hall comedy. In the rock category, the most memorable numbers are the opener, “Nothing but the Truth,” a punchy tune that displays the group’s thorough grasp of rock dynamics as it veers between metallic riffing and rollicking keyboard flourishes over a stomping beat, and “Monsieur R. Monde,” a bracing mid-tempo track that punctuates its guitar-heavy attack with some infectious cowbell accents from drummer B.J. Wilson. In the progressive arena, the most interesting tunes are “The Idol,” a sumptuous epic that adds layer after layer of keyboard and guitar as it tells the story of a hero’s fall from grace, and “The Thin End of the Wedge,” an avant-garde tune that highlights Mick Grabham’s guitar work as it creates a surreal, gothic atmosphere. Other memorable tunes include “Beyond the Pale,” a tune about the search for the Holy Grail that mixes pop hooks with a Germanic folk song feel, and “Exotic Fruit,” an amusing song that extols the virtues of its titular subject over a bouncy English music hall melody. It’s a diverse group of songs and styles, but the group delivers them with aplomb and energy, and the album is further bolstered by a sumptuous, consistent Chris Thomas production that makes sure everything blends together smoothly. As a result, Exotic Birds and Fruit is one of Procol Harum’s finest efforts of the ’70s. [Trivia note: The 2000 reissue of this album on Repertoire Records added a single version of "As Strong as Samson" and "Drunk Again," a non-album B-side and one of Procol Harum's finest and heaviest rockers. The album was issued again in 2004, this time through Friday Music, and featured "Drunk Again" as well as an extended studio take of "Blue Danube."] ~ Donald A. Guarisco, Rovi Performers: Alan Cartwright – Bass, Guitar (Bass); Barrie Wilson – Drums, Percussion; Chris Copping – Organ; Gary Brooker – Vocals, Piano; Mick Grabham – Guitar (Electric) |

Winter Birds $12.78 John Lindberg, known for his contributions to the String Trio of New York, also excels as a leader. His second recording as leader of this particular ensemble, Winter Birds, makes this clear. Lindberg leads a quartet with trumpeter/flugelhornist Baikida Carroll, multi-reed player Steve Gorn, and drummer Susie Ibarra. The disc is full of surprising moments. Opening with a brief suite consisting of five diverse miniatures, “Bam! Quatre” feats an ominous bass line under the careful interaction between Carroll’s trumpet and Gorn’s clarinet. Gorn switches to soprano sax for the breezy, strutting “Bam! Cinq,” while “Bam! Neuf” suggests a bizarre Teutonic circus. “Bam! Onze” features the bassist playing arco in the lead, with Carroll retreating to play a rhythmic role. The playful “Bam! Sept” wraps it very neatly. Gorn (on clarinet) and Carroll exchange bird-like lines to introduce “Winter Birds,” though the piece takes on a new character as the rhythm section joins them, moving away from free jazz into post-bop territory. Gorn takes center-stage in the haunting, Oriental-sounding “Ether” by overdubbing two bansuri flutes, backed by Lindberg’s eerie bowed bass and Ibarra’s exotic percussion. Lindberg’s challenging scores will never be mistaken for background music; they demand complete attention to be properly appreciated. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi Performers: Steve Gorn – Bansuri, Sax (Soprano), Clarinet; Baikida Carroll – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; John Lindberg – Bass; Susie Ibarra – Percussion, Drums |
