Exotic Strings $15.18 Collecting tracks from a huge number of albums, ARC presents on Exotic Strings works from around the world that share one basic trait: the use of a stringed instrument as the lead. With this sort of focus, as always, there’s a good amount of breadth and not a lot of depth. The album seems to have a special affinity for Asian instruments, perhaps using the word exotic in a slightly more stereotypical way than one would expect, but there are also a pair of examples each from South America and Africa (in both of which, admittedly, there are less stringed instruments to draw from). The album opens with the Chinese erhu, pipa, and ruan, then stops in Mongolia for the morin khuur, the ultimate in deep nonfretted instruments. A quick run through Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan for the komuz and a variant of the kemantche. A trio of works from Turkey detail the Turkish kemantche, the saz, and the tanbur, leaving the oud for an Iraqi track following. The Egyptian qanun provides a luxurious segue between the Middle East and Africa, followed by an extremely nontraditional performance on the kora from fusionist Ravi and a short work on the bushmen’s bow concluding the continent’s contribution. South American works highlight the Andean charango and the cuatro, unfortunately ignoring the Andean harp entirely. The second disc of the double album set returns to Asia, starting out with the Japanese koto and shamisen (the two most important strings of the islands) and the Thai phin. The final half dozen tracks all hail from India, including Mustafa Raza on the vichitra vina, Gurdev Singh on the sarod, and the outstanding Ustad Sabri Khan on the sarangi, as well as ARC stable artist Baluji Shrivastav on tracks highlighting the sitar, the surbahar, and the dilruba. Overall, the album is something of a mixed blessing, with a fair bit of coverage of the major stringed instruments of Asia and extensive liner notes giving a decent amount of detail into the various instruments. The coverage of non-Asian (with the possible exception of the Middle Eastern/Asia Minor pieces) is somewhat sparse though, prompting the question of its inclusion in the first place. From the eerie, sci-fi electronic dance that introduces the album as “Frigid Forms Sell You Warmth” to the most radical tracks, the couplet “Sex Jam One: Sexual Machinery” and “Sex Jam Two: Insect Incest,” the album cross-pollinates hardcore punk with keyboard dance grooves. Sell Your Soul Side $12.78 The sophomore release from Portland’s Upper Left Trio provides more of what the debut album, Cycling, gave listeners: a well-planned piano trio outing. On Sell Your Soul Side, there are the same hints of the classic masters inherent in the compositions — not quite enough Bill Evans or Keith Jarrett to make a reference perfectly obvious, but enough to enrich the music greatly. In the hands of pianist Clay Giberson, there’s plenty of original ability anyway. The music uses idioms from the realm of pop and soul somewhat more this time around, but not to the point of leaving the jazz realm. There are progressive beats worked in from time to time, and chord progressions reminiscent of jazz-pop fusion, but always in service of the larger composition. This is perfect ambient jazz, straight from a smoky club, with accomplished musicians. They’ve worked together long enough to fit their pieces together seamlessly, but they aren’t big enough on their own egos to steal a scene with an abrupt solo. The Who Sell Out $13.59 Pete Townshend originally planned The Who Sell Out as a concept album of sorts that would simultaneously mock and pay tribute to pirate radio stations, complete with fake jingles and commercials linking the tracks. For reasons that remain somewhat ill defined, the concept wasn’t quite driven to completion, breaking down around the middle of side two (on the original vinyl configuration). Nonetheless, on strictly musical merits, it’s a terrific set of songs that ultimately stands as one of the group’s greatest achievements. “I Can See for Miles” (a Top Ten hit) is the Who at their most thunderous; tinges of psychedelia add a rush to “Armenia City in the Sky” and “Relax”; “I Can’t Reach You” finds Townshend beginning to stretch himself into quasi-spiritual territory; and “Tattoo” and the acoustic “Sunrise” show introspective, vulnerable sides to the singer/songwriter that had previously been hidden. “Rael” was another mini-opera, with musical motifs that reappeared in Tommy. The album is as perfect a balance between melodic mod pop and powerful instrumentation as the Who (or any other group) would achieve; psychedelic pop was never as jubilant, not to say funny (the fake commercials and jingles interspersed between the songs are a hoot). Exotic Dancer Blues $12.78 Hendrix, Clapton, and Page: the holy trinity of blues-influenced rock guitar gods, to whom countless guitarists have returned, hoping to refresh and renew their playing, and to keep themselves grounded and in touch with their roots. That’s what ’80s shredder David T. Chastain had in mind when he formed the Southern Gentlemen, a bluesy hard rock unit that would allow him to concentrate more on feeling than technique, and to draw especially upon the influence of Jimi Hendrix. The only problem is the relative anonymity of the recorded result, the band’s 2000 debut Exotic Dancer Blues. The songs themselves are generally decent — not exceptional, but solidly workmanlike. However, the performances are too mannered for the songs to really catch hold. The songs aren’t lacking bite or muscle, because the band certainly rocks hard. And to Chastain’s credit, his guitar playing effectively de-emphasizes technical flash in favor of economy and feeling. So, in that sense, the project can be considered a success. But as a vocalist, Chastain doesn’t seem to have much of a feel for the blues, and the band doesn’t have the loose rhythmic swing that would really project an aura of grit and authenticity. Compounding the problem is that so many artists have drawn from exactly the same influences; it’s so difficult to stand out from the pack without bringing a fresh approach to the table.
