Tangerine Dream have never been far from Ozric Tentacles’ founder and only remaining original member Ed Wynne’s influences, but on this 2011 release he all but re-creates that band’s classic early-’70s vibe. Wynne and son Silas bring the bubbling synths, and even though wife Brandi is credited with bass and drummer Oli with percussion, the metronomic pulse of those instruments could easily be programmed on this hourlong exploration of space/prog rock. At this late stage, with nearly two dozen albums to their unusual name, you are either on board the Ozrics’ spaceship of rhythmic, spacy electronica mixed with subtle worldbeat and psychedelic ramblings or you have decided to pass on this veteran U.K. outfit’s trippy, eclectic mélange. For fans, this is another quality hour of instrumental music that doesn’t push many envelopes of the Ozrics’ established sound. Perhaps a few Tangerine Dream devotees can comfortably join the cult of Ozric lovers, but for the most part, Wynne and his three-piece play to their strengths without substantial deviation in direction or execution. Depending on your level of fandom, that either makes for a terrific, if perhaps not essential, set of music in the band’s expansive catalog, or another disc that plays out pretty much like the batch that preceded it. The tracks hover around the seven-minute mark, with “The Will of the Wisps” clocking in at nearly 11 minutes. That’s long enough to set a mood and ride a groove without wearing out the welcome. If you are unfamiliar with Ozric Tentacles, this is a perfect example of everything the band does well, a reasonable enough place to start your collection to get caught up in their mind-expanding groove. Wynne is a singular, perhaps unfairly under-recognized figure in British space rock, and although Ozric Tentacles may not be a household name, that hasn’t stopped him from continuing the distinctive approach he originally concocted in 1983, and has since perfected on albums such as Paper Monkeys. ~ Hal Horowitz, Rovi Performers: Silas – Sampling, Synthesizer, Keyboards; Brandi Wynne – Bass; Ed Wynne – Guitar, Synthesizer; Oli – Percussion, Drums

Monkeys for Nothin' and the Chimps for Free

Monkeys for Nothin’ and the Chimps for Free

$11.98

It’s no secret that Reel Big Fish were less than pleased with their time spent at Jive/Mojo Records, and they made it pretty obvious as to their elation at being finally dropped sometime after 2005′s We’re Not Happy ‘Til You’re Not Happy. So maybe that’s why their first album back in the indie world, Monkeys for Nothin’ and the Chimps for Free, is the band’s most lighthearted effort in years. That’s not to say their trademark sarcasm, snarkiness, and sharp wit are any less present, since without those bits, it wouldn’t really be a Reel Big Fish album. Don’t worry, they’re there — see “Hate You,” “Why Do All Girls Think They’re Fat?,” and “The New Version of You” as just a few examples — but it’s kinda nice that the Fish are largely back to simple and superficial mischief, instead of spending the majority of their time bitter at corporate suits and fans who call them sellouts. Reel Big Fish have simply made a fun, catchy as hell album, from the reggae-infused “Slow Down” to the island vibe of “Will the Revolution Come?” to the late-’90s ska-punk of “I’m Her Man.” “My Imaginary Friend” has a nice chorus for a sunny-day skip down the street, while overly jovial cuts like the ridiculous “Party Down” and “Everybody’s Drunk” clearly reveal the guys just enjoying playing together and having a good time. Listeners will have a hard time not following suit. This is playfulness reminiscent of the Everything Sucks era — there’s even the wonderful “Another F.U. Song” to rival the expletive blast of prior pit anthem “Nothin’” — and seeing as some of Monkeys’ songs are apparently reworked demos dating all the way back to 1999, that might have something to do with it. But reasons don’t matter so much as the result, and Monkeys for Nothin’ and the Chimps for Free presents a rejuvenated, almost carefree Reel Big Fish completely unaware that their best years should be behind them; after all, ska-punk supposedly died years ago. But Reel Big Fish just keep plowing forward, pumping out the hits like it was the easiest thing in the world, and leaving their fans all the luckier for it. ~ Corey Apar, Rovi Performers: Aaron Barrett – Glockenspiel, Mandolin, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric), Synthesizer, Vocals, Organ, Guitar; David Irish – Vocals

Singer/songwriter Tom Burris is also a published author who has taught creative writing, and it’s not impossible to guess that after a listen to his first album, For Sale. Burris is not a bad singer (imagine the love child of Dave Wakeling and Pat DiNizio), and his melodies are solid enough (if a bit on the basic side), but it’s obvious that the real selling point is meant to be his lyrics, and the guy certainly sounds literary as all get out. Burris has a genuine knack for capturing characters and incidents with words, and the best songs here play a bit like short stories, particularly “The Fisherman,” “The Voice of Gideon,” and “Sailor Song.” However, while Burris can certainly write a solid character, he doesn’t always sound quite so comfortable bringing them to life, and while careful scrutiny reveals the diversity of Burris’ themes and approaches, the album sounds awful samey as a casual listen. And while producer John Alagia has created some fine backdrops for Burris’ songs, the singer often sounds a bit low in the mix, which hardly helps matters when the whole show is riding on the lyrics. For Sale certainly shows that Tom Burris has talent, but the album also suggests he has the potential to make a stronger album under different circumstances, and one can only hope that will happen. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Jonas Tauber – Cello; Brian Johnsen – Drums, Keyboards; Chris Bittner – Bass; John Alagia – Keyboards, Guitar; Juliann Klopotic – Violin; Rich Kulsar – Drums, Percussion; Tom Burris – Harmonica, Vocals, Guitar

Two Monkeys [2009]

Two Monkeys [2009]

$16.79

Originally released in Germany in 1997, Two Monkeys really was one of Cock Sparrer’s best-written albums, marred by some of their worst ever production. It’s hard to say what went wrong, but the fact is, songs like “Battersea Bardot”, “East End Girl” and “Before The Flame Dies” deserved far more than the weedy sound and tinny blare with which they were ultimately released. Pick up the original as a collectors item, but save your ears for the 2009 Captain Oi! reissue, which remixes the original master tapes and reveals the album for the all-round masterpiece it ought to have been. Plus, four bonus tracks from the band’s San Francisco show in 2000 capture Cock Sparrer in equally seething form. [Captain Oi! reissued the CD in 2009.] ~ Dave Thompson, Rovi Performers: Colin McFaull – Vocals; Colin McFault – Vocals; Mickey Beaufoy – Guitar; Steve Bruce – Drums; Steve Burgess – Bass

Kinship with Monkeys: The Guaj? Foragers of Eastern Amazonia

Kinship with Monkeys: The Guaj? Foragers of Eastern Amazonia

$46.05

Intrigued by a slide showing a woman breast-feeding a monkey, anthropologist Loretta A. Cormier spent fifteen months living among the GuajA, a foraging people in a remote area of Brazil. The result is this ethnographic study of the extraordinary relationship between the GuajA Indians and monkeys. While monkeys are a key food source for the GuajA, certain pet monkeys have a quasi-human status. Some infant monkeys are adopted and nurtured as human children while others are consumed in accordance with the "symbolic cannibalism" of their belief system. The apparent contradiction of this predator/protector relationship became the central theme of Cormier’s research: How can monkeys be both eaten as food and nurtured as children? Her research reveals that monkeys play a vital role in GuajA society, ecology, economy, and religion. In GuajA animistic beliefs, all forms of plant and animal life — especially monkeys — have souls and are woven into a comprehensive kinship system. Therefore, all consumption can be considered a form of cannibalism. Cormier sets the stage for this enlightening study by examining the history of the GuajA and the ecological relationships between human and nonhuman primates in Amazonia. She also addresses the importance of monkeys in GuajA ecological adaptation as well as their role in the GuajA kinship system. Cormier then looks at animism and life classification among the GuajA and the role of pets, which provide a context for understanding "symbolic cannibalism" and how the GuajA relate to various forms of life in their natural and supernatural world. The book concludes with a discussion of the implications of ethnoprimatology beyond Amazonia, including Western perceptions of primates.
