What You Need to Know About Dog Boots by Davey Martin
Have you ever considered using dog boots with your dog? If your dog is exposed to harmful elements when you take them for walks, boots can be a good protection for their feet. In the cities especially, there are many items lying on the ground that can be dangerous to a dog’s feet.
You will find cigarettes still burning, broken glass from bottles, pieces of metal, chemicals from de-icing sidewalks, and many other hazards to your dog. Even the smallest cut can become irritated if not cared for properly. If a piece of something gets lodged in your dog’s foot, a serious infection can develop.
Boots can also be beneficial to help an older dog who has trouble getting up on slick floors or climbing stairs. The support can feel good for arthritic feet and legs. They can be worn to protect a foot that has been cut until it heals.
What to Look for with Boots.
Boots can provide protection for your dog, but you need to know what to look for when you decide to purchase a pair. There are reusable and disposable boots. If you just want to try them out, disposable is a cheap option. Reusable boots are the best choice if you will be using them often or are looking for a durable boot.
There are multiple sizes in dog boots; you will want to get the correct size for your dog. The wrong size can rub their feet just like with a person wearing too big or too small shoes. You can often find sizing based on breed or you can ask your vet.
Another consideration is how they fasten. Some dogs are ingenious when it comes to getting rid of things they don’t want to wear. Velcro is convenient for the owner to fasten but easy for the dog to remove. Snaps may provide a more durable option. Some boots come with double fasteners which will be more secure.
Consider your dog’s comfort when picking out boots. The material will make a big difference on how it feels. You will also have to think about the time of year that they will be wearing the boots. Some boots may be too warm for the summer; you may also need weather proof material for rainy weather.
Tips.
Your dog is probably not going to be too impressed the first time you put a pair of boots on it. To help them adjust, have some treats available and only leave them on for a few minutes. Let your dog wear them for a short time while they are adjusting to them and breaking them in.
You can find boots in most pet stores or order them online. The right pair of boots can add years of enjoyment to the life of a senior dog. Giving your dog a pair of boots to provide comfort and protection is a wonderful way to show your pet how much they mean to you.
