The tips of the dorsal, ventral, and caudal fins may also be bright red (especially in breeding males). The scales are tough and armor-like, and the dorsal and pectoral fins have sharp rays or spines. Males develop hairlike growths on the pectoral fin rays. Specimens that display less distinct coloration are sometimes called L-074. They are also often called Peckoltia vermiculata, although this is incorrect. Tiger plecos are small loricarids that are well suited for both smaller and larger aquariums. They are peaceful and can be kept with most community species. Their main diet consists of wood, so having driftwood in the tank is essential. They will also eat some algae as well as sinking pellets. Tiger plecos are nocturnal and will require places to rest during the day. Provide hiding places using items such as driftwood and rocks. These fish are relatively hardy as long as good water quality is maintained. |

They should not be kept with very small fish as they may nip at or feed on these fish as they get larger. Keep in tanks with soft substrate and plants, and with moderate water flow. Astronotus ocellatus Tiger Oscar – Small $5.99 Oscars are one of the most popular cichlids kept in aquariums. They have interesting personalities, their curiosity and lazy nature make them quite endearing. They are avid eaters and will accept pellet, frozen, and live foods, though live foods should be offered sparingly if at all. It is important to give them a varied diet so that they receive proper nutrition. A diet of strictly live feeder fish can lead to health and disease issues. Tiger Oscars are olive to brown with orange markings. The orange markings are more prevalent on juveniles, and often fade as the fish matures, but each fish varies. As juveniles they are not very aggressive, but they will become territorial and aggressive as they mature. There are very few differences between males and females, so sexing can be very difficult, particularly in young specimens. These fish require ample space, and single specimens should not be housed in tanks less than 55 gallons. Juveniles grow quickly and will easily outgrow aquariums that are smaller than recommended. They may be housed with other fish of similar temperament and size in large aquariums. |

Elacatinus macrodon Tiger Goby – Tankraised $19.99 The Tiger Goby ( Elacatinus macrodon , formerly Gobiosoma macrodon ) has a nearly transparent, greenish body, with thin brown rings from snout to tail. “Cleaner gobies” come mostly from the Gobiosoma genus but are also found in Elacatinus and a few others as fish are reclassified and new genuses are formed or assigned. Most fish from these groups clean parasites and dead scales off of larger fish, leading to their common name, but all can live without a “host” and will feed on a variety of foods in the aquarium. They are best kept in smaller reef tanks where they can be easily fed and enjoyed. Their diet should consist of meaty items like Cyclops, baby brine shrimp, mysis shrimp and similar items. While predators generally leave known “cleaner” fish alone in exchange for their services, always add larger fish well after these tiny gobies are established in the aquarium and monitor carefully. Predators may still eat smaller fish and inverts, “cleaner” or not. Not all of these gobies are “cleaner” fish and may not help keep parasites from other fish in the aquarium. Gobies from the same species may show aggression towards each other but are generally peaceful towards other fish of a similar size and temperament. |

Strombus sp. Tiger Sand Conch $5.99 Tiger Sand Conchs are beige with darker brown bands. Their shell is cone-shaped with a small crown. The True Conchs ( Strombus , Lambis , Tibia , Terebellum , Varicospira , and Eustrombus ) are algae eaters with some of the most iconic “seashell” shapes. They are usually found buried in the substrate, most often finer sand environments and may live in the open sandbed or on the reef. Some, especially Strombus and Lambis conchs, have well developed eyes that will watch the action around them. These eyes extend from under the lip of the shell and the left eye usually expends from a notch in the side of the shell. Conchs feed on algae and detritus in the aquarium. They need a large amount of plant matter in their diet and may starve if out-competed for food or if there is not enough algae in the aquarium to support them. Since most conchs – especially larger, mature snails – have large openings, it is best not to keep them in a tank with potential predators like some fish and hermit crabs. Conchs move using their powerful foot to propel themselves. When not buried in the substrate or when threatened, they can appear to hop over the bottom. |

Alpheus bellulus Tiger Pistol Shrimp $16.99 The Tiger Pistol Shrimp ( Alpheus bellulus ) is generally light overall with dark brown bands over its entire body and extending down the claws and legs. The legs may have more of a purplish or yellow color than the body. Pistol shrimp get their name from the loud popping sound they can make by quickly opening or closing their specially adapted claws. This is used as a defense mechanism to frighten off would-be predators and, unlike the Mantis Shrimp they are sometimes confused with, they are harmless to most tankmates. Pistol shrimp are scavengers and carnivores. They can be target-fed with small meaty foods occassionally but they will also feed on leftover food in the aquarium. They can be kept with most fish that will not prey on them but should not be kept with small shrimp or lobsters. Watchman or Shrimpgobies often form symbiotic relationships with certain types of Pistol Shrimp. They will prepare a den and mutually occupy it, sharing food and maintenance duties, and the protection of the burrow. The interactions of this relationship is tremendously entertaining, and may be best enjoyed in a small species set-up. Ophiocoma sp. Tiger Brittle Starfish $9.99 The Tiger Brittle Starfish ( Ophiocoma sp. ) is banded brown legs that typically alternate between tan and darker brown and are covered with short spines. The central disk is brown and may have some lighter markings. Starfish in general are very sensitive to changes in water quality and conditions. If temperature, salinity or other water parameters change quickly, starfish cannot regulate the change and are often damaged or killed. Be sure to acclimate carefully and while doing water changes, make sure the “new” water is as close as possible to the “old” water in its parameters. Most brittle and serpent starfish are scavengers. Some may prey on snails and invertebrates while others eat detritus, leftover food, and tiny organisms in and on the substrate and rockwork. These starfish do not have the suction cup-like tubed feet common in other starfish. Their legs are instead often covered with small spines or hardened scaly plates. The names “brittle starfish” and “serpent starfish” are often used interchangeably, but “serpent starfish” usually refers to smoother-legged “brittle starfish”. These starfish will usually hide in rockwork or caves and come out only to feed. Some may prey on live inverts or small fish if underfed, and they may also prey on sick, dead or dying fish. Brittle and Serpent starfish can be fed by placing a piece of clam, shrimp, scallop or other small, meaty foods by their mouth. Like many other starfish, Brittle Starfish and Serpent Starfish will sometimes break a leg off if stressed or harassed. This is seen even more in these types of starfish than in many of the thicker-bodied starfish (hence the name “brittle” starfish).
