Tortoise Pets For Sale
How to be the best possible tortoise owner ever?
Ok, so near the end of November, if I keep my grades at As and Bs, my dad and stepmom have agreed to let me get a small caged pet! I went to the pet store today with my stepmom and sister to get some stuff for our dogs and there was a baby tortoise who I completely fell in love with! The worker said he’s about 7 months old and had been for sale for a month now. He was really mild and let me pet his head, and he fell asleep in my hand. I’m really hoping nobody buys him before I can in November…
So what I’m trying to ask is what should I do before getting a tortoise to prepare for him when he gets here? And also what do do when he does get here?
Also what items should I get, what kind of cage, ect. And how to tell girls from boys..? Thank you!!!
I own a Russian Tortoise.
Diet:
Mustard Greens, Romaine, Collards, Kale, Endive, etc. Give him Dandelions the occasional Carrot and Rosebud. Never feed him fruit or iceberg lettuce, these are poor in nutrients. Put a cuttlefish bone in the exhibit, this is a great source of calcium.
Habitat:
They should have a Tortoise Table (Google it and blue prints will pop up). If it must have an aquarium it has to be 50+ gallons. The basking spot should be 90-100degrees F and the cooler side should be 70-80degrees F. The humidity needs to be 50%.
Supplies:
Tortoise Table or Aquarium
Substrate (Mulch holds humidity the best. Put in river rock, they love to climb)
Food and Water dish
Hide-a-way (Build one out of wood or buy one)
Edible plants (Mine loves Aloe Vera)
UVB Light, UVA Light, and Heat Light (Buy these if you want it to live)
Grooming:
Give it a bath every other day (Warm water) it needs to be shallow, they can’t swim. Clip the nails when they get long.
Tips when buying:
The tortoise must have a hard shell. Make sure there is no discharge from the eyes or nose. Make sure it is just Russian Tortoises in the pet shops enclosure.
Important:
Russian Tortoise do hibernate. DON”T do this the first year you get it. If you want something that doesn’t hibernate get a Herman Tortoise. Any tortoise can live around 50+ years on average.
WARNING: Any reptile has a chance of carrying Salmonella, wash your hands after handling.
